Liberal arts background

Paola Novellini got her A level certificate in liberal arts in 1994 at 'liceo classico' G. Carducci in Milan and she graduated in 2000 with 110/110 cum laude at the Catholic University of Milan in Educational Science with a specialisation in History and Philosophy.

Thanks to a grant from the Catholic University she studied at the University of Glasgow and took her Master in Adult and Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning with a specialisation in E-Learning in 2001. She then translated her thesis into Italian and it was published in the book: L. Crosta, P. Novellini, 'E-Learning fra apprendimento e insegnamento. Dimensioni etiche e linee formative', Milano, Vita e Pensiero, 2002

A deep passion for the English language

During her university years she spent several months in London studying English as a foreign language at the Thames Valley University. She took the FCE (First Certificate in English) in 1997 and the CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) in 1998.

Since she came back to Italy from Glasgow in 2001, she has been teaching English as a foreign language especially to adults working in companies of all sizes. In 2003 she took the CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) at the British Council in Milano and in 2005 she took the CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) released by Cambridge University proving her bilingualism reached throughout the years.

A growing interest in economics

Through her work experience she has developed an interest in economics and has expanded her knowledge of this area by accomplishing a Master in Business Administration with the Open University of London in April 2018. Paola Novellini completed the Professional Certificate in Business Management in 2007 and the Professional Diploma in Business Management in 2014. Beside this growing interest in economics she has developed new competences in the development of the human potential and management of human resources by accomplishing a PhD in Adaptive Leadership with the University of Sunderland in December 2022.

Rethinking the Adaptive Leadership model through the Italian Adaptive Leadership Behavior Questionnaire

Since Heifetz designed the adaptive leadership framework in 1994, the academic literature has benefitted from many qualitative research studies focusing on specific adaptive challenges and how the adaptive leadership framework can be practically used to face these. It seems very few have dealt with adaptive leadership through the quantitative lens and have attempted to measure adaptive leadership behaviors or tested Heifetz’s adaptive leadership six-dimensional model. In response, my PhD research aimed to measure the perception of adaptive leadership behaviors across the Italian corporate context and to investigate whether Heifetz’s adaptive leadership model can apply to the Italian culture. Findings and contribution to knowledge can be read in the thesis: Novellini, P. (2023) Rethinking the Adaptive Leadership model through the Italian Adaptive Leadership Behavior Questionnaire, PhD thesis, University of Sunderland.
